Meet Edward T. Creagan, MD

    • Medical training at New York Medical College, internship at the University of Michigan Hospital and then specialty training at the National Cancer Institute. He joined the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., 30+ winters ago. He sees patients as part of his clinical practice and conducts research in the Department of Oncology. He is a full Professor in the Mayo Medical School. He directs the Palliative Care Program and is among only a few doctors to be certified in the specialties of both oncology and hospice and palliative medicine.
    • Appointments include a year (1999) as President of the Mayo Staff. He is serving on the Board of Directors of the Midwest Division of the American Cancer Society. He holds endowed chairs at Mayo Clinic. Notably, he is the American Cancer Society Professor of Clinical Oncology and the John and Roma Rouse Professor of Humanism in Medicine. He was named the Mayo Clinic Distinguished Clinician (1992).
    • Teaching awards include the Excellence in Teaching Recognition from the Mayo Medical School (2000) and a similar award for his work in teaching palliative medicine to medical students.
    • Professional accomplishments include more than 400 scientific papers, in the most prestigious and rigorously peer-reviewed publications.

Dr. Creagan is the associate medical editor of Mayo Clinic's online Web site for consumer health management, and is the featured expert in articles from prevention and wellness to the mind-body connection and aging. He is editor of the book: Mayo Clinic on Healthy Aging. Dr. Creagan serves on the editorial board of the Mayo Clinic Health Management Resources Division, which offers risk assessment, wellness, self-care and lifestyle behavior change products and services from the Mayo Clinic to major US employers. Companies throughout the US use these resources to help improve employee health and productivity. He is the founder and chair of Mayo Medical School courses on the art and science of professional presentation and on death and dying.

Behind the scenes, Dr. Creagan raised three now-grown sons, is a marathoner and avid golfer with a hole in one.
